Art. 56 Relations between the Cantons and foreign states

1 A Canton may conclude treaties with foreign states on matters that lie within the scope of its powers.

2 Such treaties must not conflict with the law or the interests of the Confederation, or with the law of any other Cantons. The Canton must inform the Confederation before concluding such a treaty.

3 A Canton may deal directly with lower ranking foreign authorities; in other cases, the Confederation shall conduct relations with foreign states on behalf of a Canton.

Art. 56 Relaziuns dals chantuns cun l’exteriur

1 Ils chantuns pon far contracts cun l’exteriur en ils secturs da lur cumpetenzas.

2 Quests contracts na dastgan betg cuntrafar ni al dretg ed als interess da la Confederaziun ni als dretgs d’auters chantuns. Ils chantuns han d’infurmar la Confederaziun avant la conclusiun dals contracts.

3 Ils chantuns pon avair contact direct cun autoritads estras subordinadas; en ils ulteriurs cas succedan las relaziuns dals chantuns cun l’exteriur tras l’intermediaziun da la Confederaziun.
